What is a relationship?

Am I in a healthy one?

According to Encarta, the definition of a relationship is as follows:

re•la•tion•ship [ ri láysh'n shìp ] (plural re•la•tion•ships)

1. connection: a significant connection or similarity between two or more things, or the state of being related to something else

2. behaviour or feelings toward somebody else: the connection between two or more people or groups and their involvement with one another, especially as regards the way they behave toward and feel about one another

3. friendship: an emotionally close friendship, especially one involving sexual activity

4. connection by family: the way in which two or more people are related by birth, adoption, or marriage, or the fact of being related by birth, adoption, or marriage

Relationships are between:

- spouses/partners
- mothers & daughters (parents and children)
- siblings
- friends
- co-workers
- neighbours

RealtionshipsSometimes these relationships are great…other times they feel lousy and are stressful.

Sometimes these relationships are mutually beneficial – both parties benefit equally from them…sometimes they are not.

Sometimes one partner is more of a giver and the other a taker.

Sometimes relationships are equal…sometimes one person has more power (even perceived power) over the other.

Sometimes, this power is exerted – emotionally, physically, financially, over the other partner.

Sometimes one party has more invested in the relationship.

Sometimes both parties fight…sometimes they make up.

It is how we deal with, interact within, invest in, and balance these relationships that can impact the degree of stress felt within or from a relationship.
